1. What is an LED?
An LED is a semiconductor light source that converts electrical energy directly into light. LEDs are tiny light bulbs that fit easily into an electrical circuit. Unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs they don’t have a filament that will burn out, and they have barely any heat at the light beam, and it is always touchable, unlike all the other technologies. They are illuminated solely by the movement of electrons in a semiconductor material, and they could last just as long as a standard transistor. The lifespan of an LED surpasses the short life of an incandescent bulb by thousands of hours.
LEDs, in comparison to incandescent light sources, have lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved robustness and faster switching. LEDs can be used to build energy-efficient lighting products that save energy, help protect the environment, reduce maintenance costs and make people and things look much more attractive than traditional lighting. And they can last much longer than traditional lighting like, Metal halides, Fluorescent, High pressure sodium. With the right design, LED lights can have a lifetime of 50,000 hours and more in continuous operation.
2. What are the advantages of LED lights?
LED lights bring several advantages such as energy efficiency, durability, long lifespan, no UV emissions, no flicker and dramatically reduced maintenance requirements. This translates into energy savings, maintenance savings and an overall reduction in cost of ownership over the product’s lifetime
3. Do LEDs have any environmental benefits?
LED lights are likely the most environmentally friendly lighting options available. LED lights have numerous environmental benefits over conventional lamps. LED lights use between 50%-90% less energy which also means large carbon emission reductions, they do not contain mercury, they last much than the other technologies and they are made from fully recyclable materials. For example, the extruded aluminum heat sink used in LED down lights and LED spot lights are manufactured using 80% post-industrial recycled material

4. How long do LEDs last?
LEDs are notable for being extremely long-lasting products. Many LED light Luminaires have a rated life of over 50,000 hours. This is approximately 50 times longer than a typical incandescent, 20-25 times longer than a typical halogen, and 8-10 times longer than a typical CFL. Used 12 hours a day, a 50,000 bulb will last more than 11 years. Used 8 hours a day, it will last 17 years. It is important to mention that there is a difference between the LED chip and the LED luminaire life span.
5. Can LEDs be used with dimmers?
Usually, yes. Many LEDs are specifically listed as being dimmable. Some dimming systems work with LEDs better than others, so it’s best to test one or two before completely re-lamping a space.
6. Why is an LED lamp better than a CFL lamp?
Although CFL lamps have made progress over the years, they still have the drawback of being damaging to the environment since they contain hazardous materials, such as mercury and therefore need to be properly disposed of. CFL lamps are also sensitive to low temperatures and humidity and on/off cycling may significantly reduce the life span of the bulb. Most of the energy emitted from CFL lamps is converted to heat instead of light, which significantly decreases their efficiency rate.
LED lamps contain no mercury and emit no damaging UV rays and are approximately 50% more efficient than CFL lamps. LEDs are instant-on lights and good quality LED luminaries will dim without any flicker.
7. Why is it so important to have good heat management within your LED lamps?
The heat management of an LED lamp is critical to its efficacy and longevity. When an LED produces light some of that electricity produces heat as well. The job of the heat sink is to move that heat away from the lamp in order to ensure the LED lamp does not run at a high temperature, which decreases efficiencies and life. Without having an efficient heat management system and heat sinking in place, there can be many negative effects on the LED lamp’s characteristics, including the following:
- Decrease in forward voltage, which could strain other LED components causing them to increase their temperature.
- Optical wavelength can shift, which can consequently cause coloured LED lamps to appear different colours.
- Overall loss of light output
8. Is there really any difference between a $10 LED and a $50 LED?
Yes. LEDs are very similar to consumer electronics and quality really matters. In order for an LED to function properly and provide an acceptable light output, all of the components must be built to last. It’s always a good idea to buy from a knowledgeable LED lighting supplier.
9. Do LED lamps emit any UV or infrared radiations?
No, LED lamps provide cool light that is free from any harmful UV and infrared emissions. The lack of these emissions means that there is no discoloration of items under this light.
10. What is a LED driver?
Similar to how a ballast works with fluorescent and HID lamps, an LED driver supplies the power to the LED lamp It helps convert incoming main voltage (120V) AC power to the necessary low-voltage DC power required for LED lamps. The driver protects the lamp from line voltage fluctuations.
